Atmosphere from Adobe is the latest kid on the block when it
comes to 3d on the web, and for new users comes ready equipped with eight
avatars. But you don’t need to stick with just these, as you can build
your own, or use avatar's created by other people.
This page provides links and instructions on how to build your own avatar using Adobe's Atmosphere, as well as providing instruction on how to access the many avatars already placed on the net for your use.

There are three main software packages that can be used to build your own avatar:
Although any 3D package that can export to an ASE or OBJ file can be used create a file that can be imported into Viewpoint Scene Builder, which will produce MTS and MTX files usable by Atmosphere. The Atmosphere Builder is presently free in its Beta form and is quite suitable for beginners as it gives you the ability to built your own avatar using the same method that it uses to create its worlds. For more advanced avatars, a point and click interface, animations, and the chance to have your own face wrapped round the avatar check out Avatar Lab ($69US) from Curious Labs. For those of a more technological bent and considerably deeper pockets, Poser 5 ($320US) from the same company offers the possibility of creating sophisticated and highly personal avatars. There are a number of tutorials covering the building and publishing of avatars in Atmosphere.
Many may consider the task of building their own avatar too difficult (it isn't), but there is certainly a wide range of ready-to-wear avatars supplied by a variety of people.
